** She was originally built as the vehicle/tank landing craft LST 987 for the U.S. Navy
** The name Millard County was applied in 1955 and she remained in reserve until 1961
** In 1961 Millard County (LST 987) was transferred to West Germany along with 4 of her many sisters - Greer County (LST 799), Montgomery County (LST 1041), Rice County (LST 1089) and Saline County (LST 1101)
** In 1973 she was converted from a tank landing craft to a sand hopper/suction dredger and renamed Esperance III
** In 1978 Esperance III was brought to the Great Lakes for the first time after being re-flagged U.S. She sailed to Cleveland and worked there dredging the harbor for Cedco Maritime Construction Inc. of Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.
** In 1979 following the completion of the dredging work in Cleveland she was laid up at Sandusky, Ohio and she remained there for much of the time between 1979 and 1986 with little work. Columbus did find spuratic work dredging harbors and rivers around Lake Erie through this time. The Maumee River in Toledo was one such job. She was owned for the latter portion of this time by the American International Dredge Corporation
** In October of 1997 Columbus departed the Great Lakes for Mobile, Alabama on the Gulf of Mexico. There she was employed in a number of dredging projects
** In October of 2002 she departed the Gulf of Mexico and headed north for the Great Lakes once again
** She stopped at Staten Island, New York during February of 2003 where she apparently underwent an inspection and minor repairs
** in June 2003 following a sale to Proteus Company, she was renamed Columbia and her call sign was changed to WTM3497. She was also re-classified as an "industrial vessel"
