The 1984-built, 30,686-dwt, 18,011-grt iron ore strengthened bulk carrier Spar Garnet is seen in this photograph while she was discharging steel slabs. At the time the picture was taken she was secured alongside pier 23 at the foot of Strathearne Avenue in the port of Hamilton, Ontario which is located at the westernmost end of Lake Ontario. Photograph by Jeff Cameron.

She was built in Sasebo, Japan by the Sasebo Heavy Industries Company Ltd. for Nichimen K.K., Japan. She was one of many similar ocean class bulk carriers that were built to the specific dimensions of the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway system in the North American Great Lakes. She entered service as Mary Anne and made numerous visits to the Great Lakes. In 1993 she was sold to Norwegian Interests and chartered to FedNav Intarnational Ltd., Canada and renamed Federal Vigra. She sailed as such until May of 1997 when Spar Shipping A/S of Norway purchased her and applied the name Spar Garnet. When this picture was added to the archives in 1/2003 she was still operational as such under the Norwegian flag.
