The chemical and petroleum products tanker Emerald Star is seen in this photograph transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon of October 5th, 1998. At the time this picture was taken she was sailing southbound in the channel above lock 1 as she was heading towards lock 2 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

This tanker was built in Germany and entered service in November of 1992 as (a) Emsstern. At that time she flew the flag of Germany. In November of 1993 she was transferred to the Canadian subsidiary "Rigel Shipping Canada" along with her sisterships Elbestern now Diamond Star and Jadestern now Jade Star. Emsstern was renamed (b) Emerald Star at that time, re-registered in Halifax, Nova, Scotia and given the Canadian flag.
