The chemical and petroleum products tanker Diamond Star is seen in this photograph transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the evening hours of a day in June of 1997. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the Welland Canal and was nearing the approach wall below lock 2 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

This tanker was built in Germany and entered service in December of 1992 as (a) Elbestern. At that time she flew the flag of Germany. In November of 1993 she was transferred to the Canadian subsidiary "Rigel Shipping Canada" along with her sisterships Emsstern now Emerald Star and Jadestern now Jade Star. Elbestern was renamed Diamond Star following the transfer, she was re-flagged Canadian and re-registered out of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
