The 1976-built, 29,323-dwt, 16,432-grt, bulk carrier Rays is seen in this photograph while she was transiting upbound in the Welland Canal in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada during the afternoon hours of September 8th, 2000. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal in ballast heading for Duluth to load grain for Italy.

She was built in Muroran, Japan by the Hakodate Dock Company Ltd. for Appolo Shipping of Greece. She was launched during September of 1976 and she entered service during January of 1977 as Sophia II. In the time since then she has sailed as Sophia II (79), Sophia M (84), Belle Etoile (89), Orahovac until 1997 and when this picture was added to the archives in 12/2002 she was still listed as operational under the name Rays for Seatex Shipping Co. Ltd.
