Polyfyton - Piraeus, Greece

The 1962-built, 15,888-dwt, 10,163-grt bulk carrier Polyfyton is seen in this photograph while she was departing Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada during September of 1975. Photograph by Ray Thorsteinson courtesy Marc Piche.

She was built in Tonsberg, Norway by Kaldnes Engineering Works Ltd. for Tanktransport Ltd., Norway (A/S Tanktransport) as Marita. Through her career this ship sailed as Marita (72), Polyfyton for Acheloos Shipping Co. Ltd., Greece (79), Mathios for Tazetta Maritime Inc. of Greece (82), Agoras for Freshdrop Shipping Ltd., Malta (84) and finally Island Voyager for Island Shipping Ltd., Maldive Islands.

By the end of 1985 after an average length sailing career Island Voyager was retired and sold for scrapping. She arrived at Huangpu, China before the end of January, 1986 and in the months that followed she was gradually dismantled and her steel was shipped away for recycling.
