Panaghis Vergottis - Greece

The SD-14 class general cargo vessel Panaghis Vergottis is seen in this photograph as she was transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the morning hours August 29th, 1979. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal north of lock 1 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, destined for the Great Lakes.

Construction of this ship was ordered in June of 1972 at the Austin & Pickersgill Shipyard in England. In May of 1973 she was launched and in July of that year she began trading as Panaghis Vergottis. In the time since then she has sailed under the following names and flags. (a) Panaghis Vergottis (6/91) - Greece, (b) Virginia (6/94) - Malta and when this photograph was added to the archives she was still operational in the far east as (c) Hong Xiang under the flag of Malta.
