The bulk carrier Maria Lemos is seen in this photograph while transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the morning hours of a day in April of 1984. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal above lock 3 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Photograph by Willem VanMaanen

This ship was built in England and entered service in July of 1967 under the Norwegian flag as Birknes. She sailed under this name until 1973 when she was sold and renamed (b) Captain Pendelis S. Lyras. In July of 1975 she was renamed (c) Maria Lemos and placed under the Greek flag. This was to be her last name and on November 5th, 1986 she arrived at Gadani Beach, Pakistan where she was later broken up for scrap.
