The general cargo vessel Maria Elena is seen in this photograph while transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon hours of a day in September of 1983. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound on Lake Ontario and was about to enter the Welland Canal at Port Weller in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada destined for the upper Great Lakes.

This ship was built in Romania and was launched during May of 1975 as (a) Friendo Partner-ship. Before she entered service though her name was shortened to (b) Partner-ship. This was very short lived though and before 1975 had ended she was again named (c) Friendo Partner-ship. This time the name remained for several years however in 1977 it was once again shortened to (d) Partner-ship. In 1981 she was sold to Venezuelan interests and renamed (e) Marie Elena. Her career continued for 7 years under this name however the end finally came in 1988. On July 8th, of that year she arrived at a Brazilian scrapyard where she was later dismantled.
