The bulk carrier Mare Sereno is seen in this photograph while transiting downbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon hours of a day in May of 1980. At the time it was taken she was sailing downbound in the canal above lock 2 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. Photograph by Willem VanMaanen

This ship was built in Italy and entered service in 1966 under the Italian flag as Mare Sereno. Through her career she sailed as (a) Mare Sereno (82) - Italy, (b) Marbella (84) - Liberia, (c) Saudi Gizan (84) - Saudi Arabia, (d) Freedom (84) - Malta, (e) Anatom (85) - Vanuatu and under her last name (f) El Nile (Gibralter) her career came to an end. On July 29, 1985 she departed Rijeka, Yugoslavia on her last voyage and arrived in Xiamen, China sometime during August where she was later broken up for scrap.
