The bulk carrier Madzy is seen in this photograph while transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon hours of a day in Jule of 1989. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal and she was approaching bridge 10 in Thorold, Ontario, Canada destined for the upper Great Lakes. Photograph by Willem VanMaanen

This ship was built in West Germany and entered service during September of 1976 as (a) Kuurtanes. While under this name she flew the flag of Finland. In June of 1981 she was sold and renamed (b) Madzy and reflagged to Sweden. When this picture was added to the archives she was still reported operational as Madzy however she has had several different Swedish owners through the past 20 years.
