The general cargo ship Ruth Lykes is seen in this photograph while maneuvering in the harbour at Durban, South Africa during May of 1983. Photograph courtesy of Kevin Moore and Willem VanMaanen's collection.

This ship was built in the United States during 1965/66 and she entered service during May of 1966 as Ruth Lykes. Like most of the other Lykes ships at that time she flew the flag of the United States. She served for 28 years under this name before she came to the end of her career. In September of 1994 she was sold to St. Vincent interests who inturn re-sold the ship to Indian shipbreakers. Her name was shortened to (b) Ruth and on October 5th she arrived off Alang, India. On the 7th she was run aground on the beach and on the 19th crews began reducing the ship to scrap.
