The container ship Margaret Lykes is seen in this photograph while underway in Holland's New Waterway during August of 1986. Photograph by Dave Salisbury from Willem VanMaanen's collection

Construction of this ship was ordered in Germany during 1966 and in October of 1968 she entered service as Elbe Express under the German flag. In May of 1984 she was purchased by Lykes Brothers and renamed (b) Margaret Lykes and placed under U.S. registry. 11 years of service followed however by early 1995 her usefulness had come to an end and she was sold for scrapping. On June 27 she arrived off Alang, India and anchored off the scrapping beaches. On July 13th, she was finally run ashore and crews began slicing into her hull with oxy-acetylene torches on August 14.
