The general cargo ship Leslie Lykes is seen in this photograph while underway in South Africa during 1972. Photograph courtesy Kevin Moore from Willem VanMaanen's collection

Construction of this ship was ordered in the United States during February of 1961 and in February of 1962 she entered service as Leslie Lykes. She spent her entire career sailing under this name and under the U.S. flag. On May 25 she arrived off Alang, India and ran herself up on the beach. On June 11 crews began cutting into her hull with oxy-acetylene torches and they made short work of reducing the ship to scrap.
