The general cargo vessel John Lykes is seen in this photograph while transiting downbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon hours of September 17, 1989. At the time it was taken she was sailing northbound in the canal below lock 3 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada and she was heading for Lake Ontario.

Built in the United States in 1960 and she sailed her entire career under the name John Lykes. On April 14, 1995, after 35 years of service, she and arrived off Alang, India and was beached 5 days later for dismantling
