The general cargo / container ship Charlotte Lykes (1) is seen in this photograph while underway at Durban, South Africa during April of 1977. Photograph courtesy Kevin Moore & Willem VanMaanen's collection

This ship was built in the United States and entered service in 1963 as Charlotte Lykes. She served for her entire merchant career under this name and Lykes ownership. During the summer of 1986 she was withdrawn from active service and transferred to the United States Maritime Administration's reserve fleet. She was renamed (b) Cape Charles in June of 1986 and she is being held in layup in case the United States Sealift Command requires heavy military equipment transported to potential war zones around the world.
