Kapitonas Marcinkus - Klaipeda, Lithuania

The bulk carrier Kapitonas Marcinkus is seen in this photograph while transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the morning hours of July 5th, 1997. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal above lock 6 and she was destined for the upper Great Lakes to load grain for Europe.

This ship was built in Russia during 1977 and she entered service during November of that year as (a) Kapitan Izhmyakov. In 1992 after Russia broke up this ship was transferred to the Lithuanian Shipping Corporation, reflagged to Lithuania and renamed (b) Kapitonas Izmiakov. In July of 1996 she was given her third name (c) Kapitonas Marcinkus although she retained the Lithuanian flag. When this picture was added to the archives she still sailed under her most recent name.
