The bulker Irenes Odyssey is seen in this photograph while transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the early morning hours of a day in July of 1985. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal and had just departed from lock 3 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada destined for the upper Great Lakes.

This ship was built in Norway, launched in November of 1968 and entered service during April of 1969 as (a) Bella Maersk. At that time she flew the flag of Denmark. In February of 1982 she was sold and renamed (b) Irenes Odyssey and given a Panamanian flag. This was to last until the end of her career which finally came in 1986. On April 28th of that year she arrived at Karachi, Pakistan and shortly thereafter she was run up on one of the scrapping beaches. On May 27th crews began cutting her hull apart for scrap.
