The bulker Ionio is seen in this photograph while transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the morning hours of a day in September of 1983. At the time it was taken she was sailing southbound in the canal above lock 3 in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada and she was destined for the upper Great Lakes. Photograph by Willem VanMaanen

This ship was built in Spain, launched in October of 1970 and entered service during December of that year as (a) Aegis Destiny. At that time she flew the Greek flag. Early in 1979 she was sold and renamed (b) Ionion however she retained her Greek registry. Shortly thereafter in 1980, her owners shortened the name to (c) Ionio and once again the Greek flag remained. Early in 1986 after only 15 years of service, a comparitively short career, she was sold for scrapping. On May 31st, 1986 she arrived at Gadani Beach, Pakistan where she was subsequently dismantled.
