Falkon - Skarhamn, Sweden

The general cargo vessel Falkon is seen in this photograph as she was transiting upbound in the Welland Canal during the afternoon hours of July 3rd, 1987. She was sailing southbound at the time heading for the upper lakes to deliver cargo then load grain for Europe.

She was built in Busan, South Korea in 1977 and entered service as Riverina. In 1981 she was sold and renamed Falkon and as such she visited the Great Lakes on a number of occasions. In 1989 she was soldto Greek Interests and renamed Apollonia Faith. After only short service for these owners she was sank in the Mediterranean off the southwest coast of Sardinia on July 11, 1991. She was on a voyage from Valencia to Piraeus, Greece. Two of her crew were lost in the tragedy. Thanks to Captain Bengt-Rune Inberg and the World Ship Society.
