The bulk carrier Erna Oldendorff is seen in this photograph making her first appearance on North America's Great Lakes. The photograph was taken during the evening hours of April 30th, 2001 as the ship was approaching the entrance to the Welland Canal on Lake Ontario. She was destined for Toledo, Ohio to load wheat for Algeria.

Construction of this ship was ordered in September of 1993 at the Shikoku Dockyard in Japan. During April of 1994 the nearly completed ship was launched and in June of that year she entered service under the Liberian flag as Erna Oldendorff. When this photograph was added to the archives she still sailed as such for Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & Company of Germany
